The Yuanxiao Lantern Festival in China

The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar. As early as the 10th century, it became a custom in China to light colorful lanterns on this night.

Typically, in the city center, numerous lanterns of various shapes and sizes resembling animals, flowers, and fruits were hung for display.

In villages, fireworks, stilt parades, dragon dances, “yangge” circle dances, swing rides, and other festivities were organized. The Lantern Festival marked the conclusion of the New Year celebrations.

Since the 11th century, the festival has become widespread throughout China and holds the status of a national holiday. On this day, it is customary to hold colorful shows, theatrical performances, and public festivities with various entertainments.

The traditional dish for the day is “yuanxiao”, made from glutinous rice with sweet fillings and candied fruit. These round treats symbolize the happiness of a united family. A popular custom during the festival is solving riddles written on the lanterns. There is also a belief that, according to an ancient tradition, the souls of deceased ancestors descend to earth during the New Year to celebrate with their loved ones. On the night of the Lantern Festival, they return to the afterlife, and millions of lanterns light their way home.
